Design Student Envisions New Honda S2000 Roadster for 2020

Back in the 1995, when Honda was still producing and developing cars that drivers liked to drive, the automaker displayed a concept model called the SSM (for Sports Study Model) at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Three years later, Honda revealed the production model of that concept named the S2000 in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

The rear-wheel drive roadster with the manically revving 240hp (243PS) F20C 2.0-liter 4-cylinder DOHC-VTEC engine went on sale in 1999 and remained in production for a decade selling more than 112,000 units worldwide.

We've heard many rumors about a replacement for the S2000, but unfortunately, nothing concrete. Naturally, design students are not bound by any production plans and are free to visualize their ideas like Michael Mcgee who took part in a Honda sponsored project for the creation of an S2000 for the year 2020.

Straight Line Duel Between Subaru BRZ and Honda S2000

Can a roadster powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated (n/a) engine from the past like the (Euro-spec) Honda S2000, which traces its roots back to 1999, compete with a modern day sports car featuring a similar type of engine (albeit a flat-four) like the Subaru BRZ that was only just launched onto the market this year?

Some of you may already suspect the outcome in this "drag race" from French magazine Motor Sport, but why spoil the fun for the rest?

Head past the jump to watch the video.

Tokyo Show: 2008 Honda S2000 Type-S

Honda will show-off a limited edition version of the S2000 roadster at this year’s Tokyo Show. The S2000 Type S is the Japanese market twin of the S2000 Club Racer that’s sold in the States. Like the CS, the Type S features an aerodynamic package, aggressive suspension settings and increased body and chassis rigidity.

However, while the S2000 CS is offered exclusively with a removable aluminium hardtop, the Type S retains the basic version’s soft-top. We’ve included a translated version of the Japanese press release that you can try to read after the jump –that is, if you don’t have anything else better to do. Alternately, you can check out our post on the S2000 CR by clicking here. -High-res image gallery after the jump

Largest Gathering Of Honda S2000s Ever

On September 8, Honda US organized the “S2000 Homecoming” at the company’s Torrance, California, facility. Nearly 500 S2000 roadsters attended the event making it the largest gathering of S2000s to date. The 1,000 guests that took part had the chance to meet Shigeru Uehara, the chief engineer for the S2000 who flew from Japan to attend. S2000 enthusiasts also had an early viewing of the all-new S2000 CR before its scheduled on sale date in early October. -Continued after the jump

"It was very rewarding to see so many fans of the S2000 gathered together for this event," said Shigeru Uehara, chief engineer of the Honda S2000. "I was very happy to present the S2000 CR as my gift to enthusiasts in the United States."

"This is what owners have wanted for a while," said S2000 owner Mike Trinh, a Community Organizer of S2K International, a group of owners that meets regularly in Torrance and West Covina, California. "The Homecoming isn't just about the car; it's about the community, getting all of the owners together to share stories and information."

Honda S2000 With Corvette LS1 V8 Transplant

About time we took a break from today’s flood of Frankfurt previews. And what better than a good-old V8 engine swap on a Honda S2000; it’s totally ludicrous, it sounds troublesome and it’ll probably cost more than a Honda Fit if the work’s being outsourced. What else do you want to make it interesting? Mmm, now that we mentioned it, a video when the project’s finished. But for the time being, we’ll have to be content with the updates posted on the S2000 forum by the car’s owner that goes by the nickname, “hboy777” (click the link below).

1971 Toyota Celica With Honda S2000 Powertrain

We just love first generation Toyota Celicas for their rear-wheel drive layout and their clean, sexy looks. And this 1971 Celica must be one of the best examples we’ve seen lately. Koich, the car’s owner, not only restored this classic Japanese coupe but he took things a bit further by completely upgrading the Celica’s mechanics. Under the near stock exterior, this beautiful “Japanese Sleeper” is equipped with a Honda S2000, F20C inline 4-cylinder engine which produces 243 Hp @ 8,300 rpm and 153 ft·lbf (208 Nm) of torque @ 7,500 rpm. The engine is matted to the S2000’s 6-speed manual gearbox. -Continued: Click "Read More..." below

Other mechanical upgrades include the new suspension with AE86 aftermarket goodies and the high-performance brakes with Wilwood calipers. Inside, Koichiro threw most of the Celica’s stock components installing a 10pt roll cage, Sparco bucket seats and a Honda S2000 digital instrument cluster along with AEM ECU and serial gauges. We don’t know how the Celica drives, but we’re more than tempted to find out.

Thanks for the tip Toni!
